Something that I noticed right away was that the movie starts off without really telling the viewer what is going on. It doesn’t really say when or where it is taking place until later in the movie. This leaves a mystery and was something that I didn’t like from the start. Another thing that I noticed was that the plot was really slow moving. I dislike that the movie doesn’t give you a lot of information on what is going on. There are a lot of characters that continue to show up throughout the beginning of the movie, but the watcher has no clue what role they play or who they are.
Close to 30 minutes into the movie, still without knowing the main character’s name, we get a little bit of background on the character, but it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. We find out that she visits a prisoner named Sally Tomato, who is supposedly part of the mob, in the Sing Sing prison. His lawyer pays her to go visit him and he helps her with her financial budgeting. Even towards the end of the movie, there aren’t many more details that explain why this happens or the relevance behind it.
About an hour into the movie we find that the main character, Holly, was married and the mother of four children. Her children were not naturally hers, but she took care of them. Her husband married her at 14 years old and they were together until she left him, and the plot finally seems to be coming to light. I believe that this movie is about Holly who finds herself living in New York City in search of a richer man to marry. During the search, she runs into her past, which is when her ex husband finds her in the city. During her search for a wealthy older man, she meets a man called Paul and slowly falls in love with him over time.
If this movie was made more modernly I think that there are several things that could be improved. Although the intro song plays into the setting pretty well, the songs throughout the movie didn’t really fit, in fact, there wasn’t a whole lot of music at all. Also, I think that they should give more information on the setting.
Through research about this movie and looking at other peoples findings, I figured out a couple of interesting things about the cast and wardrobe. Audrey Hepburn, who plays Holly, had all of her dresses handmade to fit her perfectly. They also filmed parts of the movie in an actually Tiffany’s store in New York. At the end of the film Hepburn was paid $750,000 which would be about $5.9 million today.
In the end, though it is considered a “classic,” I only think that Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a decent movie; however, I would not want to watch it again in my free time. I would rate this film 5 out of 10 ducks. Although some may consider this film a classic, I would just consider it confusing, and at times, boring.
