Today, people still enjoy watching actors bring stories to life in musicals, as they join together acting and singing, or in normal theatre just as the Greeks did, but now they can also stay home and watch their favorite shows or go to a movie theater to see the latest releases.
Although these older forms of entertainment are still accessible and enjoyable to watch, the newer forms are steadily growing more popular. People would rather enjoy the comfortable, familiar environment of their home and the movie theater over the experience of seeing live acting.
A recent survey of the Helix High School student body revealed this. When asked to rank Netflix, the movie theater, live theatre, and Broadway from their most favorite form of entertainment to their least favorite form , a surprising 50% of the students surveyed ranked the movie theater as their number one form of entertainment while 60% ranked live theatre and Broadway as third and fourth respectively.
The majority of students who chose the movie theater as their favorite medium of entertainment, did so because of its accessibility. Movies are more reliable as there is always going to be something playing at the movie theater, but live performances happen less often because of the amount of time it takes to set up and prepare for a play or musical.
People will most likely have to travel more in order to see live performances compared to movie theaters because not every town puts on live performances, while the vast majority of towns have at least one movie theater.
Movies also provide a certain element that live theatre and Broadway cannot provide. Because of the technology that movie producers can access, they have the ability to insert any special effects that they choose in their movie while live theatre is confined to what they can do inside the realms of their costume and prop departments.
Perhaps another reason for the popularity of the movie theater and Netflix, is because a lot of people haven’t seen live theatre or musicals. A whopping 40% of Helix students stated that they have never seen either a live theatre performance or a Broadway musical, while another 30% have seen a live play but never a musical.
To coincide with this, 40% of these students who have never seen a musical, also said that they wouldn’t willingly choose to watch a one, even if given the chance.
Although some may just say that they don’t like the constant singing that is a key feature of a musical, one might question how they know they definitely wouldn’t like musicals if they have never seen one. While they might not like a lot of them, they may find one or two that they enjoy watching.
Entertainment has definitely changed since the time of the ancient Greek tragedies. Theatre and live acting has given way to movies and special effects. Live performance has definitely lost the majority of its popularity to movie theaters and Netflix but they still offer a unique viewing experience that makes them worth attending.
