HELIX, OREGON – On March 13, 2020, A new and deadly virus from China arrived in the United States. By the end of the month, all the students and teachers at Helix Schools had to go home and quarantine and students and teachers had a transition to online school.
Everyone had no choice but to get used to doing online classes.
It was very hard for teachers to do online classes, because many of them had never taught that way before. It was especially hard for Helix Science Teacher Rachel Gavin.
Students weren’t able to weren’t able to do events such as college visits, FBLA conferences, or Key Club activities online because there was nothing to do while they were at home except their classes on Zoom.
Most teachers and students did not like this new way of learning because soon they were getting bored of online classes, they wished that they could come back to in-person classes instead. It was very stressful when teachers and students were doing online classes.
But Senior Victoria Keene didn’t think online learning was all negative, and she tried to make the most out of it. She remembers zooming in a class last year wearing a towel on her head after taking a shower. “(It was nice) having fun during online classes because you could do anything and your classmates would be laughing,” said Keene.
Though teaching online was difficult for teachers, Ms.Gavin eventually found the right spot. “Having a one-on-one relationship between a teacher and a student (was nice) because they would ask for help when they needed it and not wait until the last minute to do it,” said Gavin.
Senior Victoria Keene said that it was great to see family during online classes because she got to spend more time at home with her family.
The opinions of students and teachers about online classes were varied because people have different opinions when it comes to learning that way. Some did not like the sound of silence because there is no noise except the teacher’s voice when it comes to online classes because all a student hears every day is silence while doing homework online. The sight of the online classes is the student just staring at a screen all day because they don’t see anything else except their computer.
I don’t think we should go to online classes because no one gets their work done when it comes to online classes. People need to stay in-person instead of online.
