As everyone teenager knows, the more homework they have, the less time that they are able to be out socializing with their friends. Some students are just too busy for any kind of social life. As one Helix student said, “(I socialize) when I have time... school, sports, that is pretty much it, maybe summer sometimes but not like it use to be.” The student hasn’t had much time to be with their friends.
As students grow older and get into high school, there is a lot of more stress and responsibility put on them. Many fun things from their childhood have been taken away, for example, the field trips that elementary students typically participate in. Some students, especially those who play sports, have long practices and often get home late. Then they still have to do their homework.
Homework puts a lot of stress on them. Some students find that they can barely see their friends, unless they’re in a small school and see each other during the school day. Even then, they’re busy working. In a survey on their social life, students said that, on average, 25% said that they hang out with their friends for about 0-1 hours per week, while 34% saw them 1-2 hours, and 42% found 3-4 hours per week to be with their friends.
While many students don't get to spend as much time with their friends as they would like, they work to find as much time together as they can. Students were asked when and where they get to see their friends.
“Everyday dawg,” one student replied, while another said, “At school, I don't see them outside of class. I'm always doing sports or homework.” or similarly, “Fridays or Saturdays” or even “Outside of School,” or “I don't often hang out with people, but when I do it's generally after school, maybe once or twice a week.”
Teenagers generally need time to take a break from everything. They don’t need to be sick to stay home. Sometimes it could be for the student’s mental health. Some teenagers need time to just take a break from everything. So when students hang out with their friends, it could relieve some stress.
When students do a study group, it takes the stress off them of doing everything by themselves. Sometimes it might be just as little as being with their friends, which many students don’t otherwise have the time to do.
Being an athlete puts a lot of stress on the student. They have to maintain homework and grade check. They have to manage their time very carefully. Sometimes they might even have to pull multiple all nighters.
As students get older, more responsibilities are put onto them. More homework, classes, and teachers. Students get over stressed, and many times worry about a mental break down, especially some students who can’t handle all the stress and homework. Some students, on the other hand, may be handling it without any major issues. They have no problem, while others might have to work harder and struggle more.
