This is about me as an athlete, playing my three sports that I participate in throughout the school year and in summer. I play volleyball, basketball, and I compete in track and field. I’d like to say that I work hard, but I can say honestly that I know amazing women I play with that work even harder. I love being on all of the teams I play on.
The first sport I play is volleyball, and my coach this year was Dianna Anderson. She is such an energetic and funny woman. I love how she pushes the team to their fullest. She is so well-rounded as well. I couldn’t ask for a cooler coach.
As for my team, I love them with all my heart, and if you ask my team or coaches--they’ll tell you I have a lot of that!
In volleyball, I have such an amazing team. We went really far this year and with a new coach, that’s huge. I play mainly in the front row, as the right side hitter, or the outside. I play all the way around usually, so I play the back row as well, but in the front is where I think I am the best.
I think that I need to be more confident, though, for next season--and maybe work on that hitting arm of mine as well.
In basketball, I have two coaches. These wonderful men are named Kirk Flerchinger and Jim Smith. I love Jim with all my heart as well. He is one of the most inspirational people I know. He pushes me to my limits and always helps me improve. As a coach, I couldn't ask for anything more.
My team is a group of very, very talented individuals, and most of them play volleyball as well. I love how they are talented and make me laugh on and off the court!
In basketball, I am a center, so I can play on the outside and on the inside. I feel that I am at my best on defense, and for offense, I think I am the best on the wing, where I can see the court well. I am interested in learning more about the baseline; more importantly, what I should and should not do. I love basketball as well, and I've played it ever since I was in first grade.
Coach Smith told me in an interview that I am “Competitive and upbeat.” This means a lot to me, I know for a fact that I am one of the most competitive people you would ever meet when it comes to athletics. I will race against you anytime--but maybe not like running a mile--count me out for that one!
Speaking of mile running, a player on my team that I adore that can run a mile--and another, and another--is named Lucy Case. She is so talented in track and field especially, and she said that I am “Enthusiastic and hardworking.” She said that I help her so much on the court, but not only her--she said I help the entire team. She said, “You’re always encouraging and always trying to pick us up. You’re always willing to teach me something. You always say like, ‘Hey, try this!’ You go beyond, ‘You got this.’”
I think for basketball, I need to work on my ball handling skills and learning to use my left hand again. I figured out that if you abuse the skills you have by not working on them for a while, you actually lose those skills and have to earn them back again. Coach Smith says that my greatest aspect is my “Heart, determination, and willingness to work hard.”
Jim Smith, is not only my coach in basketball, he is one of my coaches in track as well. In track, I do a variety of events including the shot put and discuss, along with both relays. I also may do the 400m dash, long jump, or the 100m dash. I run and throw, and thanks to all the coaches like Smith, Rory Simpson, and Jeff Newtson, track is a great experience. I love how the team isn't as divided as it is in basketball, gender-wise.
In basketball, the girls and the guys are separated on the bus, and it goes like that as well for track, but during the meets, we all sit around in the tent for snacks and when we aren't competing. Everyone gets out when there is a big race, and everyone cheers along their fellow athletes as they run. It’s outstanding how we are all so supportive. I enjoy track very much!
In track and field, Lucy Case seems to think that I push myself maybe even a little too hard. I know that I push myself, but what she said to me really made me think about how hard I actually do that, “You give your hardest no matter if you get hurt, because watching you run the flipping 400 race, and you come across that line and you're like, ‘I cannot physically breathe, and I am gonna break down crying because I cannot breathe so someone bring me my inhaler…..’ To be able to push yourself to the point when you cannot breathe or walk--that is like amazing. That is awesome….” Lucy Case means a lot to me, and she is one of my best friends as well.
I have to say though that volleyball is probably my favorite sport, but then basketball comes around and then I love basketball. And if you didn't guess it--when track comes around, it becomes my favorite. Honestly, I can never say which one is my favorite, but I love them all so much!
So throughout my entire life, I have been around many personalities. I've had many coaches, and many different teammates. As an athlete, and one who likes to write, this article was so much fun to write since sports is basically my life.
I play my three sports all the time, and am around my friends all the time! Thanks to them, and because of them, playing sports really goes beyond the sport itself!
