The rumors can start by two things. It’s either started by you or someone else, but you are always tied into it if you know about it. First, let’s say the tale begins with you. You have twisted a girl’s words; let’s say her name is Janelle. You go to your friends because you either: want to make her life miserable, or think that a joke would be funny.
When you spread the rumor, two things will happen. One of these two things is that the rumors will continue to spread, making the impact of it all worse. It will keep spreading until Janelle hears it. When she does, she will most likely not be happy. Her response to this makes all the difference.
If Janelle was shy, she would probably keep it to herself. Surprisingly this is what a lot of people do. They bottle all the emotions away until they can’t take it anymore. If she was more of a bold person, they may possibly confront people. This causes a sort of commotion, whether that be physically, socially, or mentally.
Taking a rewind back to the start, what if you were one of the people that heard the rumor? You would most likely: keep the rumor to yourself, or continue to spread it. Sometimes with rumors things can get twisted even more, and end up like a bad game of telephone. It’s not what was said in the beginning. If you leave it to yourself, you will be faced with the urge to spread it. The result will either be you committing to the tree and spreading it, or ending it on your branch by keeping it.
With these rumors, sometimes they get to the end eventually, other times a full on feud emerges and rumors are thrown all over the place. Why do people spread rumors anyways? The answer to this question is clearly explained in an article called Gossip and Rumors: Why Do People Do It? This was written by an editor for pbskids.org.
On this article, there is an open poll. This asked viewers on why they thought people spread rumors. Between Boredom, revenge, and just to be a part of the group, revenge seemed like the winner with nearly 60% of the votes. There were a total of 9455 votes.
People tend to think that revenge may be a reason for this tree. I find all this annoying because nobody needs this commotion in their life. Revenge is sweet until it comes back around, and with rumors, this happens more often than you think. Rumors can be good, don’t get me wrong, but I personally think that the rumors that make people upset or angry shouldn’t be spread.
